Ezekiel 20:11

“And I gave them my statutes, and showed them my judgments, which if a man do, he shall even live in them.”

Historical and Contextual Background:Ezekiel was a prophet who lived during the Babylonian exile. He prophesied to the Israelites who were carried away captive to Babylon. In this chapter, Ezekiel is addressing the rebellious nature of the Israelites and their history of disobedience to God.

God’s Giving of His Statutes and Judgments:In this verse, God is reminding the Israelites that He had given them His statutes and judgments. This refers to the commandments and laws that God had revealed to them through Moses. God had provided them with a moral and ethical framework to live by, which included instructions on worship, social justice, and personal conduct.

The Promise of Life in Obedience:God emphasizes that if a person followed His statutes and judgments, they would experience life. This is not merely physical existence but a life of blessings, favour, and prosperity. Obedience to God’s commandments leads to a fulfilling and meaningful life that is aligned with God’s purposes.

The Principle of Obedience:This verse highlights the principle that obedience to God’s commands brings life and blessing, while disobedience leads to negative consequences. Throughout the Bible, God consistently presents the choice between obedience and disobedience, with obedience being the path that leads to His blessings.

Application to Our Lives:a. The Importance of God’s Word: Just as God gave His statutes and judgments to the Israelites, He has given us His Word, the Bible, as a guide for our lives. We should study and understand His commandments, principles, and teachings.

b. Obedience and Blessing: This verse reminds us that true life and blessing are found in obedience to God’s Word. When we align our lives with His will and follow His commandments, we can experience His blessings, peace, and favour.

c. Consequences of Disobedience: The verse also serves as a warning against disobedience. When we disregard God’s commandments and go our own way, we can expect negative consequences and a separation from the abundant life God intends for us.

d. Trusting in God’s Guidance: As we seek to follow God’s statutes and judgments, we need to rely on His grace, wisdom, and strength. Through the power of the Holy Spirit, we can receive the help we need to live a life that pleases God.
