Because they had not executed my iudgements, but had despised my Statutes, and had polluted my Sabbaths, and their eyes were after their fathers idoles. Ezekiel 20:24 (KJV)

Context: Ezekiel 20 is a chapter in the book of Ezekiel where the prophet receives a message from God concerning the rebellious history of the Israelites. In this chapter, God addresses the disobedience and idolatry of the people of Israel and their failure to keep His commandments.

Understanding the Historical Context: During Ezekiel’s time, the people of Israel had been taken into captivity by the Babylonians. God had allowed this to happen as a consequence of the Israelites’ persistent disobedience and idolatry. Ezekiel was a prophet sent by God to deliver His messages to the exiled Israelites and to warn them of the consequences of their actions.

The Failure to Execute God’s Judgments: In Ezekiel 20:24, God states that the Israelites had not executed His judgments. This refers to their failure to uphold God’s laws and commandments in their society. They had disregarded the righteous judgments and had chosen to follow their own ways instead of obeying God’s instructions.

Despising God’s Statutes: God accuses the Israelites of despising His statutes. Statutes refer to the specific laws and regulations given by God to guide His people in righteous living. The Israelites had shown contempt and disregard for these statutes, refusing to follow them and choosing their own paths instead.

Polluting God’s Sabbaths: Another charge brought against the Israelites was the pollution of God’s Sabbaths. The Sabbath was a sacred day set apart by God as a time of rest and worship. However, the Israelites had defiled the Sabbath by engaging in activities contrary to God’s will on that day. They had failed to honor God’s appointed time and had profaned it with their disobedient actions.

Chasing after Their Fathers’ Idols: The verse concludes by stating that the Israelites’ eyes were after their fathers’ idols. This refers to the continued practice of idolatry that had been passed down from generation to generation. Despite God’s repeated warnings and judgments, the people had persisted in following the false gods and idols of their ancestors instead of turning to the one true God.

Lessons to Learn: Obedience to God’s commandments is of utmost importance; disregarding His laws and following our own ways can lead to negative consequences in our lives. God’s statutes are given to guide us in righteous living, and we should not despise or neglect them but rather embrace and follow them willingly. Observing and honoring the sacred times and seasons set by God is important; the Sabbath, in particular, is a time for rest and worship, and we should refrain from engaging in activities that dishonor God during this time. The influence of our ancestors and the traditions we inherit can have a significant impact on our choices, so we should be discerning and ensure that we are not blindly following practices that are contrary to God’s will. In Ezekiel 20:24 we see God’s displeasure with the disobedience and idolatry of the Israelites, and it serves as a reminder to remain faithful, obedient, and devoted to God, avoiding the pitfalls of idolatry and disobedience.
