Ezekiel 21:12

Cry and howle, sonne of man, for it shalbe vpon my people, it shalbe vpon all the princes of Israel: terrours, by reason of the sword, shall be vpon my people: smite therefore vpon thy thigh. Ezekiel 21:12 (KJV)

Ezekiel was a prophet who lived during the Babylonian exile of Israel, and he addressed the exiles in Babylon with messages of judgment, restoration, and hope. In Ezekiel 21:12 he receives a striking vision concerning the sword of the Lord and a forthcoming sacrifice. In biblical imagery the sword frequently symbolizes divine judgment and warfare, and here the sword of the Lord is described as being “filled, and made fat with the fatness of the fat,” a vivid picture of the abundance of judgment and destruction that will be poured out upon the nations.

The passage mentions Bozrah, a city in the land of Edom (Idumea), located southeast of Israel. The Lord declares that He has a sacrifice in Bozrah, which refers to a symbolic act of judgment and punishment upon the Edomites for their wickedness and rebellion against God. While sacrifices in the Old Testament were generally a means of atonement for sins, this particular sacrifice is not for atonement but rather an act of divine retribution, signifying God’s judgment upon the Edomites, who were enemies of Israel and had taken part in its downfall.

The verse also records a great slaughter in the land of Idumea, emphasizing the severity of God’s judgment with widespread destruction and loss of life inflicted upon the Edomite people. Thus Ezekiel 21:12 portrays a vision of divine judgment upon the land of Edom; the Lord’s sword, depicted as filled, symbolizes the impending devastation. The sacrifice in Bozrah and the great slaughter in Idumea serve as clear indications of God’s retribution against the Edomites for their opposition to His people. It is important to understand this verse within its historical and prophetic context: while it refers to specific ancient events, it also conveys broader themes of God’s judgment and the consequences of rebellion against Him.
