Ezekiel 22:12

Listen to this article

“In thee have they taken gifts to shed blood; thou hast taken usury and increase, and thou hast greedily gained of thy neighbours by extortion, and hast forgotten me, saith the Lord GOD.”

Context:Ezekiel was a prophet during the exile of the Israelites in Babylon. He received a message from God to prophesy against Jerusalem, exposing its sins and calling the people to repentance. In this verse, Ezekiel addresses the corrupt leaders and people of Jerusalem, highlighting their various sins.

The verse begins by accusing the people of Jerusalem of taking bribes or gifts to shed innocent blood. This indicates a perversion of justice, where the leaders were accepting bribes to rule unjustly. This behavior was a direct violation of God’s command to administer justice impartially and protect the innocent.

Taking gifts to shed blood:The verse begins by accusing the people of Jerusalem of taking bribes or gifts to shed innocent blood. This indicates a perversion of justice, where the leaders were accepting bribes to rule unjustly. This behavior was a direct violation of God’s command to administer justice impartially and protect the innocent.

Usury and increase:Usury refers to the practice of charging excessive interest on loans. The verse suggests that the people of Jerusalem were engaging in exploitative lending practices, taking advantage of their fellow Israelites in financial distress. God condemns this behaviour as it reflects a lack of compassion, fairness, and brotherly love.

Greedily gained by extortion:The people of Jerusalem were also accused of greedily gaining wealth through extortion. Extortion involves obtaining money or goods through threats, coercion, or abuse of power. The leaders and people were oppressing their neighbours, extracting unjust gain from them and ignoring their well-being.

Forgetting God:Lastly, God accuses the people of Jerusalem of forgetting Him. In their pursuit of personal gain and sinful activities, they had forsaken their relationship with God and disregarded His commands. They had turned away from worshiping and obeying Him, which led to their moral and spiritual decline.

  • The passage emphasises the importance of justice, fairness, and integrity in our dealings with others. As Christians, we should strive to be honest, upright, and unbiased in our relationships and interactions.
  • It warns against the sin of greed and the pursuit of wealth at the expense of others. Our focus should be on godly values rather than material gain.
  • We should always remember and prioritise our relationship with God. Neglecting our spiritual lives can lead to moral decay and distance from God.
  • This passage serves as a reminder that God sees and judges our actions. We should be mindful of how we treat others, ensuring that our conduct aligns with God’s principles.

In summary, Ezekiel 22:12 exposes the corrupt practices of the people of Jerusalem, highlighting their injustices, greed, and forgetfulness of God. It calls them to repentance and serves as a lesson for us to uphold justice, reject greed, and prioritise our relationship with God in all aspects of life.
