Ezekiel 22:6

Posted on 18 May at 13:55

Behold the princes of Israel, euerie one were in thee to their power to shead blood. Ezekiel 22:6 (KJV)

The book of Ezekiel is a prophetic work written during the Babylonian captivity, conveying messages that God gave to the prophet concerning judgment and future restoration. Chapter 22 delivers a harsh indictment against Jerusalem and its leaders, exposing the depth of their wickedness and explaining why divine judgment is imminent.

In this verse the focus is on the princes of Israel—both political and religious authorities who held sway over the nation. Rather than guiding the people with righteousness, they became corrupt, actively participating in violence, injustice, and oppression. Their abuse of power is described as “to shed blood,” indicating a pattern of murder, exploitation, and the perversion of justice that violated God’s commandments.

Ezekiel condemns these leaders for abandoning their responsibility to protect and serve the community. Instead of upholding justice, they exploited the vulnerable, turning the instruments of governance into tools of oppression. Their actions provoked God’s anger, and the subsequent verses foretell severe consequences: invasion, destruction, and exile for Jerusalem and its people.

Application and Lessons

  • a. Responsibility of Leaders – The passage underscores that authority carries a divine mandate to promote the well‑being of those under one’s care, fostering justice and righteousness.
  • b. Consequences of Injustice – It warns that God does not tolerate the abuse of power; oppression inevitably brings divine judgment.
  • c. Importance of Integrity – Leaders must maintain personal integrity and act according to God’s standards, for corruption harms both the ruler and the community.
  • d. God’s Standard of Justice – The text reminds believers that God demands justice and compassion, especially from those in leadership, calling each person to evaluate their own actions and ensure fairness toward others.

In conclusion, Ezekiel 22:6 serves as a stark warning against leadership corruption. It calls every believer, whether in a position of authority or not, to uphold justice, righteousness, and integrity, recognizing that failure to do so invites serious divine consequences.
