Ezekiel 23:25

Listen to this article

“Ezekiel 23:25 (KJV) says: ‘And I will set my jealousy against thee, and they shall deal furiously with thee: they shall take away thy nose and thine ears, and thy remnant shall fall by the sword: they shall take thy sons and thy daughters; and thy residue shall be devoured by the fire.’”

Historical Context: Ezekiel was a prophet who ministered to the exiled Israelites during the Babylonian captivity. The passage is part of a longer allegorical prophecy where Ezekiel uses the metaphor of two sisters, Oholah and Oholibah, representing the kingdoms of Israel and Judah, respectively. This passage specifically refers to Oholibah (Judah).

Symbolic Language: The passage employs symbolic language to portray the severe judgment that God would bring upon Oholibah due to her idolatry and unfaithfulness. The language is graphic and emphasizes the harshness of the punishment.

Jealousy of God: The verse begins by stating that God will set His jealousy against Oholibah. This jealousy is not an envious or possessive emotion but rather an expression of God’s righteous indignation over the idolatry and spiritual adultery committed by His people. God desires their exclusive worship and obedience.

Dealing Furiously: The text states that those against Oholibah (possibly representing the Babylonians or other foreign nations) would deal furiously with her. This suggests that God would allow or even orchestrate the invasion and conquest of Judah as a means of punishment for their disobedience.

Physical Mutilation: The passage describes the punishment in graphic terms, mentioning the removal of the nose and ears. While these actions may have been used metaphorically, symbolizing the humiliation and degradation of Judah, they could also represent the physical mutilation that sometimes occurred during warfare and conquest.

Loss of Children: The verse further predicts that Oholibah’s sons and daughters would be taken away. This signifies the captivity and exile of Judah’s people, where they would be separated from their land and families, experiencing the sorrow and devastation of losing their loved ones.

Devoured by Fire: Finally, the passage concludes with the statement that the residue or remnant of Judah would be devoured by fire. This symbolizes the destruction and devastation that would come upon the remaining inhabitants of Judah, emphasizing the severity of God’s judgment.

Overall, Ezekiel 23:25 in the King James Version presents a vivid and powerful image of God’s judgment against Judah for their idolatry and unfaithfulness. It serves as a warning to the Israelites of the consequences of turning away from God and emphasizes the need for repentance and obedience.
