Ezekiel 23:27
Thus will I make thy lewdnesse to cease from thee, and thy whoredome brought from the land of Egypt: so that thou shalt not lift vp thine eyes vnto them, nor remember Egypt any more. Ezekiel 23:27 (KJV)
In this verse the prophet Ezekiel delivers a message from God to the people of Jerusalem, using metaphorical language to convey a powerful spiritual lesson. To understand the context, it is helpful to look at the surrounding verses and the broader narrative of the book of Ezekiel. In Ezekiel 23 the prophet employs an allegory to describe the unfaithfulness of the Israelites in their relationship with God. He portrays the northern kingdom of Israel as a woman named Aholah, and the southern kingdom of Judah as her sister named Aholibah. These names symbolically represent Samaria, the capital of the northern kingdom, and Jerusalem, the capital of the southern kingdom, respectively.
Throughout the chapter Ezekiel recounts the idolatrous practices and unfaithfulness of both Israel and Judah, comparing them to the actions of promiscuous women who engage in adultery and prostitution. The nations had turned away from the worship of God and embraced the false gods and practices of surrounding nations, particularly Egypt and Assyria. In verse 27 God declares His intention to put an end to the people’s unfaithfulness and their fascination with Egypt. The phrase “thy whoredom brought from the land of Egypt” refers to the Israelites’ inclination to return to the idolatrous practices they had learned during their time of slavery in Egypt. Despite being delivered from Egypt through the miraculous events of the exodus, the people repeatedly turned back to the gods and customs of Egypt, forsaking their covenant with God.
God’s purpose in declaring that “thou shalt not lift up thine eyes unto them, nor remember Egypt any more” is to emphasize His desire to cleanse His people from their idolatrous ways and turn their hearts back to Him alone. He wants to break the allure and influence of Egypt on His people so they may fully devote themselves to Him without distraction. This verse carries a broader spiritual lesson for believers today. It highlights the importance of wholehearted devotion to God and the dangers of spiritual unfaithfulness and idolatry. Just as God desired the Israelites to turn away from their idolatrous practices and focus solely on Him, believers are called to renounce anything that competes with their commitment to God. Ezekiel 23:27 reminds us of God’s longing for purity and faithfulness in our relationship with Him. It serves as a reminder that we are to diligently guard our hearts and minds, avoiding anything that may lead us astray from the truth and the worship of the one true God.
