Ezekiel 29:12

Listen to this article

And I will make the land of Egypt desolate in the midst of the countreys that are desolate, and her cities among the cities that are layed waste, shall be desolate fourtie yeeres: and I will scatter the Egyptians among the nations, and wil disperse them through the countreys. Ezekiel 29:12 (KJV)

The book of Ezekiel is a prophetic book in the Old Testament, and the prophecy in chapter 29 is directed toward Egypt. At this time Egypt was a powerful regional nation, and the people of Judah, to whom Ezekiel was prophesying, sometimes looked to Egypt for assistance against their enemies. Yet Egypt relied on its own strength rather than turning to God, trusting in its military might and idols.

In this verse God declares that He will bring judgment upon Egypt. He promises to make the land desolate, and its cities will be among those that are laid waste. This judgment is presented as a direct consequence of Egypt’s pride, idolatry, and refusal to acknowledge God as the one true God. God’s purpose in this judgment is to humble the nation and to demonstrate His supremacy over all nations and idols.

God specifies that Egypt will remain desolate for a period of forty years. The number forty often symbolizes a time of testing or complete judgment in Scripture, underscoring the severity of the punishment. During those years Egypt’s once‑thriving cities will lie in ruin, a stark illustration of the depth of divine judgment.

Another aspect of the judgment is the scattering and dispersal of the Egyptians among the nations. The people will be taken from their homeland and scattered throughout various lands. This serves both as punishment and as an opportunity for the exiled Egyptians to witness God’s power and sovereignty among other peoples.

While the prophecy is addressed specifically to Egypt, it offers broader lessons for all readers. First, it reminds us of God’s absolute sovereignty and authority over every nation; no matter how powerful a nation may be, it remains subject to His judgment. Second, it warns against relying solely on human strength and idols instead of seeking God’s guidance and trust. Third, it shows that God’s judgment is just and purposeful, capable of bringing repentance, humility, and a recognition of His supremacy.

In conclusion, Ezekiel 29:12 proclaims a severe judgment on Egypt: the land will become desolate, its cities laid waste for forty years, and the people will be scattered among the nations. This passage serves as a powerful reminder of God’s sovereignty and the consequences of depending on human power alone.
