Listen to this article

“Ezekiel 31:2 (KJV): Son of man, speak unto Pharaoh king of Egypt, and to his multitude; Whom art thou like in thy greatness?”

Context and Background:The book of Ezekiel is a prophetic book in the Old Testament, written by the prophet Ezekiel during the Babylonian exile. The book contains messages from God to the exiled Israelites, as well as prophecies concerning the nations around them, including Egypt.

Understanding the Verse:In Ezekiel 31:2, God instructs Ezekiel to deliver a message to Pharaoh, the king of Egypt, and his multitude. The verse poses a question, asking Pharaoh to consider who he is comparable to in terms of his greatness.

  • Key Themes:
  • God’s Sovereignty:Throughout the book of Ezekiel, God asserts His sovereignty over all nations and rulers, including Pharaoh and Egypt. The message to Pharaoh reminds him that his greatness is limited compared to the greatness of God.
  • Pride and Humility:This verse raises the theme of pride and humility. Pharaoh was known for his pride and arrogance, and God’s question challenges him to examine his own greatness and recognize his limitations in comparison to God.
  • Comparisons and Illustrations:Throughout the passage (Ezekiel 31:2-18), God uses illustrations and comparisons, such as the great cedar tree representing Pharaoh and Egypt. These comparisons emphasize that even the most magnificent creations of human power and greatness are nothing compared to the power and majesty of God.
  • Application:

    • Humility before God:The message to Pharaoh serves as a reminder to us to cultivate humility in our lives. No matter how great or powerful we may consider ourselves to be, we must always recognize that our greatness is fleeting and limited. It is essential to humbly submit ourselves before the almighty God.
    • Guarding against pride:Pride can blind us to our own limitations and lead to a false sense of self-importance. It is crucial to guard against pride and cultivate a humble spirit, acknowledging that all our accomplishments and abilities are gifts from God.
    • Recognizing God’s supremacy:The verse invites us to reflect on the greatness of God and recognize His sovereignty over all things. It reminds us that there is none like our God, and all human achievements pale in comparison to His power and majesty.
    • Seeking true greatness:Instead of pursuing worldly greatness, we should seek to grow in our relationship with God and align our lives with His will. True greatness is found in serving and glorifying God, not in the accumulation of wealth, power, or status.

In conclusion, Ezekiel 31:2 reminds us of the importance of humility, recognizing God’s sovereignty, and seeking true greatness in our lives. It calls us to reflect on our own greatness in light of God’s infinite greatness and to humbly submit ourselves before Him.
