Ezekiel 34:16

Listen to this article

“I will seek that which was lost, and bring again that which was driven away, and will bind up that which was broken, and will strengthen that which was sick: but I will destroy the fat and the strong; I will feed them with judgment.”

Context:This verse is part of a larger passage in the book of Ezekiel where the prophet Ezekiel receives a message from God regarding the shepherds of Israel. In this passage, God rebukes the leaders of Israel for their negligence and failure to care for His people. He then declares His intention to personally take on the role of a shepherd and provide for His flock.

Let’s break down the verse to understand its key messages:

“I will seek that which was lost”:God expresses His commitment to actively search for those among His people who have been lost, whether physically or spiritually. He desires to bring them back into His fold and restore their relationship with Him.

“And bring again that which was driven away”:God promises to bring back those who were driven away from His presence, whether due to their own choices, external circumstances, or the failures of the shepherds. He is eager to reconcile with those who have strayed and bring them back to the community of believers.

“And will bind up that which was broken”:God displays His compassion and care by pledging to bind up the wounds and brokenness of His people. This includes emotional, spiritual, and physical brokenness. He offers healing and restoration to those who are hurting.

“And will strengthen that which was sick”:God’s intention is to strengthen the weak and provide support to those who are spiritually or physically feeble. He offers His power and grace to help His people overcome their weaknesses and challenges.

“But I will destroy the fat and the strong; I will feed them with judgment”:This part of the verse carries a contrast. While God promises to care for the vulnerable, He also declares His judgment against those who have abused their power and oppressed the weak. The “fat and the strong” represent the arrogant and selfish leaders who have exploited their positions. God will hold them accountable for their actions.

Overall, Ezekiel 34:16 conveys a message of hope, restoration, and justice. It shows God’s deep concern for His people, His commitment to seek out and restore those who are lost or broken, and His resolve to judge those who have abused their authority. It highlights both God’s compassionate nature and His righteous judgment.
