Ezekiel 34:4

Posted on 18 May at 13:54

The diseased haue ye not strengthened, neither haue yee healed that which was sicke, neither haue ye bound vp that which was broken, neither haue yee brought againe that which was driuen away, neither haue yee sought that which was lost; but with force and with crueltie haue yee ruled them. Ezekiel 34:4 (KJV)

The book of Ezekiel is set during the Babylonian captivity. The prophet Ezekiel, himself among the exiles in Babylon, received messages from God to convey to the people of Israel—both those in captivity and those who remained in Jerusalem. In this passage the prophet delivers a sharp rebuke to Israel’s leaders, especially the spiritual leaders who were meant to be shepherds of God’s people. The Old Testament often uses the term “shepherd” to denote leaders and rulers.

God accuses these shepherds of neglecting their God‑given responsibilities. Rather than caring for the flock, they exploited and oppressed the people. They failed to provide strength to the weak, healing to the sick, restoration to the broken, to bring back the driven‑away, or to seek the lost. Instead, they ruled the flock with force and cruelty.

Beyond the literal shepherds, the passage carries a broader spiritual message. It highlights the consequences when leaders do not fulfill their duties, resulting in suffering and scattering of God’s people. The text underscores the need for compassionate and just leadership that reflects God’s character.

The passage also points forward to the true Shepherd—Jesus Christ. In John 10:11 Jesus identifies Himself as the Good Shepherd who lays down His life for the sheep, contrasting Himself with the hireling who flees in danger. Jesus fulfills the role that Israel’s false shepherds failed to embody.

Application for today: Ezekiel 34:4 challenges every believer to examine personal leadership roles—whether in the church, family, or society. Do we provide strength, healing, and restoration to those in need? Do we seek the lost and the broken? Are we ruling with compassion and justice, following the example of the Good Shepherd?

The broader chapter goes on to describe God’s judgment upon the false shepherds and His promise to gather the scattered flock, personally care for them, and establish a covenant of peace (Ezekiel 34:10‑16). This reminds us of God’s faithfulness and His desire to restore and heal His people.

In conclusion, Ezekiel 34:4 serves as a sobering reminder of the failure of Israel’s leaders and the urgent need for true shepherds who reflect Christ’s character. It calls believers to emulate the Good Shepherd in all leadership, while trusting in God’s ultimate judgment and restorative promise for His people.
