Ezekiel 35:1

Listen to this article

“Ezekiel 35:1 (KJV): Moreover the word of the Lord came unto me, saying,”

Background and Context: Ezekiel was a prophet of God who was taken into captivity in Babylon along with the exiled Israelites. He was called by God to be a watchman and to deliver messages of judgment and restoration to the people of Israel. In the preceding chapters, Ezekiel had prophesied against Edom, a nation descended from Esau, the brother of Jacob (Israel).

Understanding the Verse:

  • Key Themes and Lessons:
  • Divine Communication: The fact that the word of the Lord came to Ezekiel emphasizes the importance of divine revelation. It highlights the role of prophets as intermediaries between God and His people. Throughout the Bible, God communicates His will to His chosen servants, and their responsibility is to faithfully deliver His message to the intended recipients.
  • Accountability: Ezekiel’s obedience to the divine word shows his willingness to accept the role of a prophet and the responsibility that comes with it. As believers, we are also called to be attentive to God’s voice, whether through His written Word, the Bible, or through the guidance of the Holy Spirit. We should be ready to respond obediently to His leading.
  • God’s Sovereignty: The message conveyed to Ezekiel in this verse demonstrates God’s sovereignty over all nations, including Edom. The fact that God’s word came to Ezekiel regarding this particular nation reveals that God is aware of their actions and is concerned about their accountability. It serves as a reminder that God is the ultimate authority and judge over all the nations of the earth.
  • Application:

    • Listening to God’s Word: We should prioritize spending time in God’s Word, the Bible, and actively seek His guidance and revelation. God may choose to speak to us in various ways, and we need to have a receptive heart to hear His voice.
    • Obedience and Responsibility: Like Ezekiel, we should be ready to obey God’s instructions and fulfill the responsibilities He has given us. Whether it’s in our personal lives, ministry, or relationships, we should seek to align ourselves with God’s will and faithfully carry out His purposes.
    • Recognition of God’s Sovereignty: Understanding that God is sovereign over all nations can help us maintain a proper perspective and trust in His providence. We can have confidence that He is aware of what is happening in the world and will ultimately bring justice and judgment as He sees fit.

Remember, this verse is just the beginning of a larger passage, so it is beneficial to read the surrounding verses and chapters to gain a complete understanding of the context and the specific message God delivered through Ezekiel.
