Ezekiel 35:13

Listen to this article

“Thus with your mouth ye have boasted against me, and have multiplied your words against me: I have heard them.”

Context:Before diving into the specific verse, it’s important to understand the broader context of the book of Ezekiel. Ezekiel was a prophet who lived during the Babylonian exile, and his ministry was primarily directed towards the exiled Israelites. The book contains messages of judgment, hope, and restoration for God’s people.

Verse Analysis:Ezekiel 35:13 in the King James Version (KJV) says, “Thus with your mouth ye have boasted against me, and have multiplied your words against me: I have heard them.” In this verse, God is speaking to the people of Edom, a neighbouring nation to Israel. The Edomites had been hostile towards Israel and had taken advantage of Israel’s vulnerable state during the exile. God confronts the Edomites for their words and actions against His people.

God’s Awareness:The verse emphasises that God is fully aware of the words and actions of the Edomites. They had boasted against Him and multiplied their words against Him. This shows that God is not indifferent to the mistreatment of His people. He hears and takes note of what people say and do, and He holds them accountable for their actions.

Consequences of Words and Actions:The verse suggests that the words and actions of the Edomites had consequences. Their hostility towards God’s people would not go unnoticed or unpunished. Throughout the book of Ezekiel, God pronounces judgment on various nations, including Edom, for their sins and mistreatment of His people.

Application:While this verse specifically addresses the Edomites, it carries broader principles that are relevant to us today. It serves as a reminder that God is attentive to how we speak about and treat others, especially His people. Our words and actions have consequences, and God holds us accountable for them. As believers, we are called to love one another, speak words of encouragement, and treat others with kindness and respect.

  • Redemption and Restoration:Although the emphasis in this verse is on judgment, it’s important to note that the book of Ezekiel also contains messages of hope and restoration. In later chapters, God promises to gather His people, bring them back to their land, and bless them. This points to God’s faithfulness and His ultimate plan of redemption for His people.

In conclusion, Ezekiel 35:13 reminds us of God’s awareness of our words and actions. It highlights the consequences that can arise from mistreating God’s people and serves as a call to love, respect, and encourage one another. It also points to God’s faithfulness and His ultimate plan of redemption and restoration for His people.
