Ezekiel 36:17
“Son of man, when the house of Israel dwelt in their own land, they defiled it by their own way and by their doings: their way was before me as the uncleanness of a removed woman.”
Historical Context:Ezekiel was a prophet who ministered to the exiles in Babylon after the destruction of Jerusalem in 586 B.C. The Israelites had been unfaithful to God, disobeyed His commandments, and engaged in idolatry, which ultimately led to their exile.
Symbolic Language:In this verse, God uses the metaphor of a “removed woman” or a woman in her menstrual period to describe the uncleanness of the Israelites’ ways. In the Old Testament, ritual impurity was associated with certain bodily discharges, including menstruation. The uncleanness here represents the moral and spiritual defilement caused by the Israelites’ sins.
Defiling the Land:God accuses the Israelites of defiling the land He had given them. The land of Israel was considered holy and set apart by God for His people. However, the Israelites’ sinful behaviour and idolatry polluted the land and violated the covenant relationship between God and His chosen people.
Their Own Way and Doings:The verse emphasises that the defilement of the land was a result of the Israelites’ own actions and choices. They followed their own sinful ways and engaged in practices that were contrary to God’s commands. This highlights the personal responsibility of each individual for their actions and the consequences that follow.
