Ezekiel 37:16

Posted on 18 May at 13:54

Moreouer thou sonne of man, take thee one sticke, and write vpon it, For Iudah and for the children of Israel his companions: then take another sticke, and write vpon it; For Ioseph the sticke of Ephraim, and for all the house of Israel his companions. Ezekiel 37:16 (KJV)

Historical Context: Ezekiel was a prophet who prophesied during the Babylonian exile of Israel. This prophecy in chapter 37 is known as the vision of the dry bones, where God showed Ezekiel a valley filled with dry bones and asked him if these bones could live. In response to Ezekiel’s faith, God brought the bones back to life, symbolizing the restoration of the people of Israel. In verses 15‑16, God instructs Ezekiel to take two sticks and write on them. The sticks represent two different groups of people: one for Judah (representing the southern kingdom of Judah) and the children of Israel, and the other for Joseph (representing the northern kingdom of Israel) and the house of Israel.

Reunification of Israel: The symbolism of the sticks indicates the future reunification of the divided kingdom of Israel. During Ezekiel’s time, Israel was divided into two kingdoms, with the northern kingdom (Israel) being taken into captivity by Assyria, and the southern kingdom (Judah) being taken into captivity by Babylon. God’s message through Ezekiel was that these two kingdoms would be brought together again as one.

Unity and Restoration: By bringing the two sticks together, God expresses His intention to restore the unity and harmony among His people. It signifies the reunification of the northern and southern tribes of Israel, and the reestablishment of the people as one nation under God.

Messianic Fulfillment: This vision of the two sticks has also been seen as a messianic prophecy. In the New Testament, Jesus is described as the one who brings unity and reconciliation among God’s people. Through His life, death, and resurrection, Jesus brought together Jews and Gentiles, making them one in Him. The vision of the two sticks in Ezekiel can be seen as a foreshadowing of this messianic work of Christ.

Application: As believers today, we can draw several lessons from this passage. It reminds us of God’s faithfulness in fulfilling His promises and teaches us the importance of unity and reconciliation within the body of Christ. We should strive to live in harmony with one another, regardless of our differences, just as God brought together the divided kingdom of Israel.

In conclusion, Ezekiel 37:16 speaks of the reunification of the divided kingdom of Israel through the symbolism of two sticks. It represents God’s plan to restore unity and harmony among His people, and it also points to the messianic work of Jesus Christ in bringing together Jews and Gentiles. As believers, we are encouraged to pursue unity and reconciliation among ourselves, reflecting the heart of God.
