Ezekiel 4:16

Listen to this article

“As the appearance of the bow that is in the cloud in the day of rain, so was the appearance of the brightness round about. This was the appearance of the likeness of the glory of the LORD. And when I saw it, I fell upon my face, and I heard a voice of one that spake.”

Ezekiel 1:28 is part of a visionary encounter that the prophet Ezekiel had with the glory of the Lord. In this chapter, Ezekiel describes a detailed and awe-inspiring vision of God’s divine presence and heavenly beings. It is important to note that this vision was a significant event in Ezekiel’s life and ministry as a prophet, as it marked the beginning of his prophetic calling.

The Appearance of the Bow:The verse begins by comparing the appearance of the brightness surrounding the divine presence to that of a rainbow in the cloud during a rainy day. The rainbow symbolizes God’s covenant with humanity after the Flood (Genesis 9:13-17). Here, Ezekiel sees a similar radiant and awe-inspiring manifestation, signifying the presence and faithfulness of God.

The Likeness of the Glory of the LORD:Ezekiel states that the appearance he witnessed was the likeness of the glory of the Lord. This implies that what he saw was a representation or an approximation of God’s glorious presence. It is essential to understand that God’s glory is beyond human comprehension and surpasses anything earthly.

Falling Upon His Face:As Ezekiel beholds this incredible sight, he falls upon his face in reverence and awe. This response demonstrates a posture of humility and recognition of God’s holiness. Falling on one’s face was a customary way of showing reverence and acknowledging God’s supreme authority.

Hearing a Voice:In addition to seeing the manifestation of God’s glory, Ezekiel hears a voice of one who speaks. This voice is believed to be that of God Himself or an angelic being conveying God’s message. The voice indicates that there is a purpose and communication associated with this divine encounter.

Overall, Ezekiel 1:28 provides a glimpse into the prophet’s encounter with the glory of God, emphasizing the magnitude and indescribable nature of His presence. The vision serves as a profound reminder of God’s covenant faithfulness, His sovereign authority, and the need for human humility in His presence. This encounter with God’s glory also marks the beginning of Ezekiel’s prophetic ministry, as he receives divine messages and visions throughout the book of Ezekiel to convey God’s will to His people.

Studying this verse prompts us to reflect on our own posture before God’s glory, recognizing His majesty and surrendering ourselves in reverence and obedience. It also encourages us to seek a deeper understanding of God’s character and His faithfulness to His covenant promises.
