Ezekiel 44:11

Posted on 18 May at 11:29

Yet they shall be ministers in my Sanctuary, hauing charge at the gates of the house, and ministring to the house: they shall slay the burnt offring, and the sacrifice for the people, and they shall stand before them to minister vnto them: Ezekiel 44:11 (KJV)

“And they shall minister in my sanctuary, having charge at the gates of the house, and ministering to the house: they shall slay the burnt offering and the sacrifice for the people, and they shall stand before them to minister unto them.” This verse is part of a larger section in the book of Ezekiel where the prophet receives a vision from God regarding the restoration and future glory of the temple in Jerusalem. In this vision God gives instructions to Ezekiel concerning the Levites who will serve in the future temple, and also concerning the priests, the sons of Zadok, who will keep the charge of the gate.

Let us break down Ezekiel 44:11 and explore its key themes and meanings.

Ministers in the Sanctuary: The Levites mentioned in this verse are called to minister in God’s sanctuary. The priests mentioned in this verse are called to minister to the house of the LORD. Both descriptions emphasize their role as servants of God, responsible for carrying out their duties within the sacred space and highlighting the significance and holiness associated with their service.

Having Charge at the Gates of the House: The Levites and the priests are given the responsibility of guarding and overseeing the gates of the temple. This implies their role in controlling access to the holy place and ensuring that only those who are worthy and properly prepared can enter into God’s presence.

Ministering to the House: They are also tasked with ministering to the house, which refers to the temple itself. They are to take care of the various tasks required for the maintenance and proper functioning of the temple, ensuring that it remains a place of worship and reverence.

Sacrificial Duties: While Ezekiel 44:11 does not detail the sacrificial duties, later verses assign the priests the authority to perform the rituals of offering sacrifices on behalf of the people, including slaughtering burnt offerings and other sacrifices according to God’s instructions. The Levites are likewise given authority to slay the burnt offering and the sacrifice for the people.

Guidance and Spiritual Support: The phrase “they shall stand before them to minister unto them” suggests that both the Levites and the priests are to provide guidance, instruction, and spiritual support to the people, facilitating their relationship with God.

Overall, Ezekiel 44:11 highlights the crucial role of the Levites and the priests in the future temple, emphasizing their responsibility to serve, to guard the entrance, to perform sacrificial duties, and to minister to the people. It underscores the importance of holiness, obedience to God’s instructions, and the need for proper worship and devotion in approaching the presence of God.

It is worth noting that Ezekiel’s vision of the temple and its ministers serves as a symbolic representation of God’s ideal and the restoration of His people. The principles and lessons conveyed in this passage can be applied to our lives today, reminding us of our call to serve God faithfully, to minister to others, and to approach Him with reverence and humility.
