As for the rest of the tribes, from the East side vnto the West side, Beniamin shall haue a portion: Ezekiel 48:23 (KJV)

The book of Ezekiel is a prophetic book in the Old Testament containing prophecies given by the prophet Ezekiel during the Babylonian exile. In chapter 48 the prophet describes the division of the land among the twelve tribes of Israel in the future restoration of the nation. This division is detailed in chapters 47 and 48 and is structured as equal strips of land for each tribe, running from east to west rather than proportionally based on population size. Each tribe is assigned a portion of the land as its inheritance.

Ezekiel 48:23 records that Benjamin is assigned a portion of the land. Benjamin was one of the twelve sons of Jacob and one of the twelve tribes of Israel. In the earlier division under Joshua, Benjamin’s territory was located between the tribes of Ephraim and Judah. In Ezekiel’s vision the prince’s portion lies to the north and Simeon’s to the south, with Benjamin’s territory spanning from the east side even unto the west side.

The tribe of Benjamin played an important role in Israel’s history; for example, Saul, the first king of Israel, was from Benjamin, and Jerusalem, the future spiritual center of Israel, was located within Benjamin’s territory during the time of Joshua. Benjamin’s portion therefore represents the tribe’s continuing significance and presence in the restored Israel.

While the division described in Ezekiel’s vision has a literal and historical context, it also carries spiritual significance. The restored and divided land symbolizes the future blessings and inheritance that God has for His people and reminds us of God’s faithfulness to fulfill His promises. In a broader sense the division can be seen as a metaphor for the spiritual blessings and inheritance believers in Christ receive, as they are described as co‑heirs with Christ (Romans 8:17) and are promised an eternal inheritance (1 Peter 1:3‑5). The inclusion of Benjamin, a tribe with historical significance, reminds us that God includes and values all His people in His plan of restoration and blessing.

In conclusion, Ezekiel 48:23 highlights Benjamin’s continued significance in the restored Israel and underscores God’s faithfulness to His covenant promises, while also pointing believers to the spiritual inheritance that awaits them in Christ.
