Ezekiel 48:29

This is the land which ye shal diuide by lot vnto the tribes of Israel for inheritance, and these are their portions, saith the Lord God. Ezekiel 48:29 (KJV)

The book of Ezekiel primarily focuses on the prophecies and visions given to the prophet Ezekiel during the Babylonian exile. In chapters 40‑48 the prophet receives a detailed vision of a future restoration of Israel, including the rebuilding of the temple, the return of the glory of God, and the division of the land among the tribes.

Division of the Land: In Ezekiel’s vision he sees an angelic (heavenly) guide measuring the dimensions of the land and allocating portions for each of the tribes of Israel. The allocation was to be carried out by lot, a common method of determining land distribution in ancient Israel (Joshua 18:10). The passage specifically mentions the nine tribes and the half‑tribe, noting that the half‑tribe of the children of Joseph received two portions.

Inheritance: The division of the land by lot was a significant event because it represented the fulfilment of God’s promise to give the land of Canaan as an inheritance to the descendants of Abraham (Genesis 12:7). Each tribe would receive its portion of the Promised Land according to the measured boundaries.

God’s Sovereignty: The phrase “saith the Lord GOD” emphasizes that the division was not random or arbitrary. It was ordained by God Himself, who determined the boundaries and portions for each tribe, underscoring His sovereignty and faithfulness in keeping His promises.

Spiritual Lessons: While the primary focus of this passage is the physical division of land, it also points to spiritual truths. God is a God of order and purpose; He has a plan for each of His people and distributes spiritual blessings according to His will (Ephesians 1:3). Believers are invited to recognise and appreciate the unique inheritance and calling that God has given to each individual.

In conclusion, Ezekiel 48:29 reveals God’s orderly plan to divide the land among the tribes of Israel as an inheritance. It reminds us of God’s sovereign hand in allocating blessings and calls us to embrace our individual callings and inheritances from Him, trusting in His faithful fulfillment of promises.
