Ezekiel 48:7

“And by the border of Reuben, from the east side unto the west side, a portion for Judah.”

Context:The book of Ezekiel is a prophetic book in the Old Testament. It contains visions and prophecies given to the prophet Ezekiel during the Babylonian exile. In chapter 48, Ezekiel receives a vision of the division of the land among the twelve tribes of Israel in the future restoration of the nation.

Reuben and Judah:Reuben and Judah were two of the twelve tribes of Israel. Reuben was the firstborn of Jacob, but he lost his birthright due to an incident involving his father’s concubine (Genesis 35:22). Judah, on the other hand, became the dominant tribe and received the birthright and blessing from Jacob (Genesis 49:8-12).

Land allocation:In Ezekiel’s vision, the land is divided into portions for each tribe, and the portion of Judah is mentioned in this verse. The land for Judah is adjacent to the border of Reuben, stretching from the east side to the west side. This allocation of land signifies the restoration of the twelve tribes and the reestablishment of their territories in the future.

Symbolic significance:The division of the land in Ezekiel’s vision carries symbolic meaning. The restoration of the twelve tribes and the allocation of land represent the fulfilment of God’s promises to His people. It points to a time of blessing, prosperity, and unity among the tribes under the reign of the Messiah, who would be from the tribe of Judah (Genesis 49:10).

Messianic fulfilment:The reference to Judah in this verse is significant because it is from the tribe of Judah that the ultimate Messiah, Jesus Christ, would come. The lineage of Jesus can be traced back to King David, who was from the tribe of Judah (Matthew 1:1-17). Through Jesus, the blessings promised to Judah and the entire nation of Israel find their fulfilment.
