Ezekiel 5:7

Listen to this article

Therefore thus saith the Lord God, Because yee multiplied more then the nations that are round about you, and haue not walked in my Statutes, neither haue kept my iudgments, neither haue done according to the iudgements of the nations that are round about you: Ezekiel 5:7 (KJV)

Historical Context: The book of Ezekiel was written during the Babylonian exile when Israel was taken captive by King Nebuchadnezzar. Ezekiel, called by God, delivered messages to the exiled Israelites in Babylon.

Israel’s Disobedience: In this verse God, through Ezekiel, rebukes Israel for multiplying more than the surrounding nations and for failing to walk in His statutes, keep His judgments, and follow the customs of the nations around them. Their rebellion exceeded that of their neighbors.

Divine Expectations: God had given Israel His laws and commandments, expecting obedience and faithfulness. Yet they not only ignored His statutes but also surpassed the other nations in rebellion, acting contrary to the covenant relationship He established with them.

Consequences of Disobedience: Throughout Ezekiel God warns of impending judgment on Jerusalem and the destruction of the Temple. The Babylonians would be used as instruments of His judgment because of Israel’s persistent disobedience.

Lessons for Us Today:

  • a. Obedience to God – The verse underscores the importance of living according to God’s statutes and judgments. Believers are called to seek His will, follow His guidance, and not be swayed by worldly practices.
  • b. Consequences of Sin – Disobedience carries consequences. Even in the age of grace through Christ, sin still produces results, and God desires that we align our lives with His Word to experience His blessings.
  • c. Learn from History – The Israelites’ failure to learn from surrounding nations serves as a cautionary example. We should study Scripture and the experiences of others so we do not repeat the same mistakes.

In summary, Ezekiel 5:7 reminds us of Israel’s disobedience and the severe judgment that followed. It calls believers today to walk in God’s ways, heed His statutes, and draw wisdom from history so that we may live in alignment with His covenant.
