Ezekiel 7:1

Posted on 18 May at 15:00

“Moreover the word of the LORD came unto me, saying,”

Context:Ezekiel was a prophet who lived during the time of the Babylonian exile. He was called by God to deliver messages to the people of Israel, both those who were still in Jerusalem and those who had been taken captive to Babylon. Ezekiel’s prophecies contained warnings of impending judgement due to the people’s disobedience and idolatry. In Ezekiel 7, God’s judgement against Israel is pronounced, and the chapter describes the severity of the coming destruction.

Key Themes and Lessons:

Divine Communication:The verse begins with the phrase, “Moreover the word of the LORD came unto me.” Throughout the book of Ezekiel, this phrase is repeated many times, emphasising that the message Ezekiel delivers is not his own, but rather a direct revelation from God. It highlights the importance of listening to and obeying God’s word.

God’s Sovereignty:The phrase “the word of the LORD” signifies that Ezekiel’s message carries divine authority. It reminds us that God is in control, and His word holds power. In a time of impending judgement, this reminder brings comfort and reassurance that even in difficult circumstances, God is still on the throne.

Divine Judgement:The book of Ezekiel contains numerous prophecies of God’s judgement against the sinful actions of the people of Israel. In Ezekiel 7, God’s judgement is specifically directed towards the land of Israel, its inhabitants, and their idolatrous practices. This serves as a reminder that sin has consequences, and God will hold people accountable for their actions.

Need for Repentance:Throughout the book of Ezekiel, there is a consistent call for the people to repent and turn back to God. The impending judgement is not intended to be the final word but rather a wake-up call for the people to recognise their sinful ways and return to a right relationship with God. It teaches us the importance of repentance and the opportunity for restoration even in the face of judgement.

Application:

  • Recognise the authority of God’s word:Just as Ezekiel received the word of the Lord, we should value and respect the Scriptures as God’s inspired message to us. Let us study and meditate on His word, seeking to understand and apply it in our daily lives.
  • Acknowledge God’s sovereignty:In challenging times, we can find comfort in knowing that God is in control. Trusting in His sovereignty helps us navigate through difficulties, knowing that He has a plan and purpose for our lives.
  • Take sin seriously:The judgement pronounced against Israel reminds us of the seriousness of sin. Let us examine our hearts and lives, identifying areas where we may be straying from God’s commands. Repentance and turning back to Him should be our response.
  • Embrace the opportunity for restoration:Even in the midst of judgement, God desires our repentance and offers the opportunity for restoration and renewal. Let us respond to His call, seeking His forgiveness and striving to live in obedience to Him.

Remember to study the entire chapter of Ezekiel 7 to gain a deeper understanding of the message and context surrounding verse 1.
