Ezra 2:40

“The Levites: the children of Jeshua and Kadmiel, of the children of Hodaviah, seventy and four.”

Context:The book of Ezra is part of the historical books in the Old Testament. It focuses on the events surrounding the return of the Jewish exiles from Babylon to Jerusalem and the restoration of the temple. In chapter 2, a list of the returning exiles is recorded, including the Levites.

The Levites:The Levites were a priestly tribe descended from Levi, one of the twelve sons of Jacob. They were chosen by God to assist the priests in their duties and serve as worship leaders and teachers of the Law. The Levites played an essential role in the religious life of Israel.

Jeshua and Kadmiel:Jeshua and Kadmiel were prominent Levitical families mentioned in this verse. These families were responsible for the spiritual and ceremonial aspects of the worship services. They had important roles in leading the people in the proper observance of the Law and in offering sacrifices and offerings.

Hodaviah:Hodaviah is another Levitical family mentioned in this verse. Not much is known about this particular family, as they are not mentioned elsewhere in the Bible. However, they were among those who returned from exile in Babylon and participated in the rebuilding of Jerusalem.

The number seventy-four:The verse specifies that the combined total of Levites from the families of Jeshua, Kadmiel, and Hodaviah was seventy-four. This number represents a relatively small portion of the returning exiles. It is important to note that the Levites were not allotted land like the other tribes but were given cities and surrounding pasturelands for their support.

Significance:This verse highlights the presence and participation of the Levites among the returning exiles. It underscores the importance of the Levitical priesthood in the restoration of the temple and the worship of God. Although the number may seem relatively small, it signifies the continuity of the Levitical lineage and their commitment to their God-given responsibilities.

In conclusion, Ezra 2:40 in the KJV provides a brief mention of the Levites, specifically the families of Jeshua, Kadmiel, and Hodaviah, who returned from Babylon to Jerusalem. Despite the small number mentioned, the verse emphasizes the ongoing role of the Levites in leading the people in worship and maintaining the spiritual life of the community.
