Ezra 2:8

Posted on 18 May at 15:22
Listen to this article

“The children of Zattu, nine hundred forty and five.”

Context: The book of Ezra records the history of the Jewish people returning from Babylonian exile and the rebuilding of the temple in Jerusalem. Ezra 2 lists the names of the heads of households who returned with Zerubbabel from Babylon to Jerusalem.

The children of Zattu: Zattu was one of the families or clans among the exiles who returned to Jerusalem. In this verse, it specifically refers to the children or descendants of Zattu. The mention of the number, nine hundred forty-five, indicates the size of the group from this particular family who returned.

Importance of genealogies: The inclusion of detailed genealogies in biblical accounts served several purposes. It helped to establish and preserve the lineage and tribal heritage of the people. It also demonstrated God’s faithfulness in fulfilling His promises by preserving a remnant of the chosen people despite the exile. Genealogical records were vital for determining rightful inheritance, priestly eligibility, and the Davidic lineage leading to the Messiah.

Significance of the number: The number 945 represents a specific count of the descendants of Zattu who returned to Jerusalem. It highlights the faithfulness of God in preserving and restoring a remnant of the exiles, even though it may not hold any specific theological or symbolic significance.

Individual significance: While Ezra 2:8 may not provide specific details about the individuals from the family of Zattu, it reminds us that each person is significant and valued in God’s eyes. The inclusion of their names demonstrates God’s concern for the individual members of the community, and their contribution to the rebuilding of Jerusalem and the temple was important.

  • Remember that the Bible contains much more than can be gleaned from a single verse or passage. It is always helpful to read and study the surrounding verses and chapters to gain a deeper understanding of the historical context, the people involved, and the overall message of God’s Word.
