Ezra 3:1

Posted on 18 May at 13:59

And when the seuenth moneth was come, and the children of Israel were in the cities: the people gathered themselues together, as one man to Ierusalem. Ezra 3:1 (KJV)

The book of Ezra is a historical account of the Israelites’ return from exile in Babylon to Jerusalem and their efforts to rebuild the temple. This verse takes place after their return and marks a significant event in their journey.

The verse mentions the “seventh month.” In the Jewish calendar this is the month of Tishrei, which falls in the autumn season and includes important festivals such as the Feast of Trumpets (Rosh Hashanah) and the Day of Atonement (Yom Kippur). The reference to the seventh month shows that the people’s gathering in Jerusalem held special significance.

After their exile the Israelites were scattered in various cities, yet when the seventh month arrived they came together in Jerusalem. This demonstrates their unity and shared purpose. Despite being in different locations they were united in the desire to rebuild the temple and worship God.

The phrase “the people gathered themselves together as one man” emphasizes the unity and collective determination of the Israelites. They were united in faith, purpose, and commitment to the Lord. Such unity was essential for the success of their endeavor and reflected their renewed devotion to God.

The Israelites’ gathering as one man teaches us the importance of unity in worship and service to God. When believers come together with a shared purpose they can accomplish great things for the Kingdom of God. It reminds us that we are all part of the body of Christ and should work together in harmony.

The children of Israel came from different cities, backgrounds, and experiences, yet they put aside their differences and united for a common goal. This challenges us to set aside personal preferences and focus on what unites us as followers of Christ.

The people’s gathering in Jerusalem indicates a shared vision to rebuild the temple. A shared vision unites people, inspires them, and gives clear direction. It is crucial for the Church today to have a shared vision of spreading the Gospel and building God’s Kingdom.

The seventh month was a season of important festivals for the Israelites. It reminds us to value and participate in times of corporate worship and celebration. These special seasons provide an opportunity for believers to come together, worship God, and renew their commitment to Him.
