Ezra 3:8
“Now in the second year of their coming unto the house of God at Jerusalem, in the second month, began Zerubbabel the son of Shealtiel, and Jeshua the son of Jozadak, and the remnant of their brethren the priests and the Levites, and all they that were come out of the captivity unto Jerusalem; and appointed the Levites, from twenty years old and upward, to set forward the work of the house of the LORD.”
Historical Context: The book of Ezra tells the story of the Israelites’ return from Babylonian captivity to rebuild the temple in Jerusalem. After the seventy years of exile prophesied by Jeremiah, King Cyrus of Persia issued a decree allowing the Jewish exiles to return and rebuild the temple.
Second Year of Return: The verse mentions the second year of their return to Jerusalem. This indicates that some time had passed since the initial return of the exiles. It highlights their determination and commitment to rebuild the house of God despite the challenges they faced.
Leaders of the Restoration: Zerubbabel, the grandson of King Jehoiachin, and Jeshua, the high priest and son of Jozadak, were instrumental in leading the restoration efforts. Zerubbabel served as the governor appointed by King Cyrus, and Jeshua oversaw the religious aspects as the high priest.
Unity and Participation: The verse mentions “the remnant of their brethren the priests and the Levites.” This implies that not all of the Israelites returned to Jerusalem, but a faithful remnant came back to participate in the rebuilding of the temple. It highlights their unity and collective effort in fulfilling the task at hand.
Levites and the Work of the House of the LORD: The Levites, who were chosen from among the tribe of Levi, were appointed to set forward the work of the house of the Lord. They were responsible for various tasks related to the worship and service in the temple. The mention of the age requirement of twenty years and upward indicates that they were young and able-bodied men ready to engage in the physical labor required for the reconstruction.
Significance: This verse captures the early stages of the temple restoration project. It reveals the determination, unity, and dedication of the Israelites to rebuild the house of God in Jerusalem. Despite the challenges and opposition they faced, they remained faithful to God’s call and worked diligently to reinstate worship in the land.
