Be it knowen vnto the king, that the Iewes which came vp from thee to vs, are come vnto Ierusalem, building the rebellious and the bad citie, and haue set vp the walles thereof, and ioyned the foundations. Ezra 4:12 (KJV)

The book of Ezra records the events that took place during the return of the Jews from the Babylonian exile to Jerusalem. In this verse, a letter written to King Artaxerxes by certain adversaries of the Jews is mentioned. These adversaries were trying to hinder the rebuilding of Jerusalem and its walls.

Opposition to the Jews: The verse highlights the opposition faced by the Jews who had returned to Jerusalem to rebuild the city. The adversaries described Jerusalem as a “rebellious and bad city,” implying that they were attempting to discredit the Jews and their efforts. It is important to note that opposition to God’s people and His work is not uncommon throughout history.

Building Jerusalem: Despite the opposition, the Jews were determined to rebuild Jerusalem. They had successfully set up the walls and joined the foundations. This signifies their resilience and commitment to restore the city that held great significance in their history and faith.

God’s Faithfulness: The book of Ezra demonstrates God’s faithfulness to His people. Despite the opposition, the Jews were able to rebuild Jerusalem with divine assistance and provision. God’s plans and purposes cannot be thwarted by human opposition when His people remain steadfast in their commitment to Him.

Application to the Christian Life: As Christians, we may also face opposition when we seek to do God’s work or live according to His principles. However, we can find encouragement in the example of the Jews in Ezra’s time. They did not give in to discouragement or abandon their mission but continued to build and persevere. Likewise, we should remain steadfast in our faith, trust in God’s faithfulness, and press forward in fulfilling His purposes in our lives.

Importance of Unity: The Jews in Ezra’s time were united in their purpose and worked together to rebuild Jerusalem. Despite differences and challenges, they joined forces to accomplish a common goal. This highlights the importance of unity among believers in fulfilling God’s work. When we stand together, supporting and encouraging one another, we can overcome obstacles and achieve great things for God’s glory.

In conclusion, Ezra 4:12 reminds us of the opposition faced by the Jews in rebuilding Jerusalem, their determination to complete the task, and God’s faithfulness throughout the process. It also serves as an encouragement for us to remain steadfast in our faith, trust in God’s provision, and work together in unity to fulfill His purposes in our lives.
