Ezra 7:18

Posted on 18 May at 13:57

And whatsoeuer shall seeme good to thee, and to thy brethren, to doe with the rest of the siluer and gold; that doe, after the will of your God. Ezra 7:18 (KJV)

Context: The book of Ezra is a historical book in the Old Testament that details the events surrounding the return of the Jewish exiles from Babylon to Jerusalem and the restoration of the temple. Ezra was a scribe and priest who played a crucial role in the restoration of Israel’s worship and religious practices.

Analysis:

Seeking God’s Will: In this verse, King Artaxerxes issues a decree to Ezra regarding the use of silver and gold for temple service, and while the phrase “after the will of your God” is not a direct quotation, it emphasizes the importance of aligning actions with God’s will.

Consulting Others: The king instructs Ezra and his brethren to determine how to use the remaining resources, demonstrating the value of collective wisdom and the humility of involving fellow believers in decision‑making for the community.

Stewardship: Ezra’s responsibility to manage the silver and gold reflects the principle of stewardship. As a faithful servant of God, he is entrusted with using these resources appropriately for God’s house, encouraging believers to responsibly handle what God has provided.

Trusting God’s Provision: The decree shows confidence in God’s provision for His work, as the resources are granted to support the temple’s restoration, and Ezra’s request for resources implies trust that God, the ultimate provider, will meet the needs of His work.

Application:

Seek God’s Will: In decision‑making, seek God’s will through prayer, Scripture, and godly counsel, aligning actions with His desires.

Consult Others: Involve mature believers in important choices to foster unity, avoid errors, and benefit from collective wisdom.

Stewardship: Recognize all resources come from God; manage finances, time, talents, and other blessings in ways that honor Him.

Trust in God’s Provision: Have faith that God will supply what is needed for His purposes, even when resources seem scarce.

Overall, Ezra 7:18 reminds us to seek God’s will, collaborate with others, practice stewardship, and trust in His provision, principles that are consistent with the spirit of Ezra’s ministry and that guide believers in honoring God and advancing His kingdom.
