Ezra 8:2

Of the sonnes of Phinehas, Gershom: of the sonnes of Ithamar, Daniel: of the sonnes of Dauid, Hattush. Ezra 8:2 (KJV)

The book of Ezra records the return of the Israelites from Babylonian captivity and the subsequent rebuilding of the temple in Jerusalem. Ezra 8:2 provides a concise roster of the heads of families who accompanied the leader on the journey from Babylon to the holy city. The verse states that the sons of Phinehas, Gershom, the sons of Ithamar, Daniel, the sons of David, and Hattush were among those who set out under Ezra’s direction.

Phinehas and Ithamar are identified in the biblical tradition as descendants of Aaron, the brother of Moses and the first high priest of Israel. Their presence underscores the continuation of the priestly line that was essential for the restoration of proper worship in the rebuilt temple. David, mentioned as the father of Daniel, refers to the royal house of Israel, reminding readers that the Davidic lineage remained a central element of the community’s identity even after exile. Gershom is noted as a descendant of Moses; his name appears in Exodus 2:22 as the son of Moses, linking the returning group to the foundational leadership of the nation. The Daniel listed here is distinguished from the well‑known prophet Daniel of the Old Testament, indicating that the name was common and that this individual belonged to the Davidic family rather than the prophetic tradition.

The diversity of names in this short list illustrates the unity and commitment of the exiles. Men from priestly families, royal descent, and even those associated with the great lawgiver Moses joined together with a common purpose: to rebuild the temple and restore proper worship of Yahweh. Their collective effort demonstrates how various tribal and priestly lineages could cooperate toward the shared goal of re‑establishing Israel’s religious life in Jerusalem, a theme that resonates throughout the book of Ezra.
