Ezra 8:23

Posted on 18 May at 15:22

“So we fasted and besought our God for this: and he was intreated of us.”

Context:The book of Ezra is a historical account of the return of the Israelites from exile in Babylon and their efforts to rebuild the temple in Jerusalem. In this verse, Ezra, a priest and scribe, describes how he and his companions fasted and prayed to God for protection as they embarked on a journey from Babylon to Jerusalem.

Key Points:

  • Fasting and Prayer:The verse begins by mentioning that Ezra and his companions fasted and prayed to God. Fasting is a spiritual discipline that involves abstaining from food or certain types of food for a designated period, often accompanied by prayer. It is a way to humble oneself before God, seek His guidance, and express dependence on Him.
  • Seeking God’s Help:The purpose of the fasting and prayer in this verse was to seek God’s intervention and protection during their journey. The Israelites were carrying a significant amount of treasure, including silver, gold, and valuable items for the temple. They recognised the dangers they might face on the road, such as bandits and enemies who could potentially attack and rob them. Therefore, they turned to God, acknowledging their need for His guidance and protection.
  • God’s Response:The verse concludes by stating that God answered their prayers. He was entreated by them, meaning that He heard their pleas and granted their requests. The implication is that God extended His favour and protection over Ezra and his companions, ensuring their safe journey.
  • Lessons for Believers:This verse teaches us the importance of seeking God’s guidance and protection in our lives. It reminds us that fasting and prayer are powerful spiritual disciplines that can bring us closer to God and help us align our hearts with His will. Just as Ezra and his companions sought God’s help in their time of need, we should also approach Him with our concerns, seeking His wisdom, guidance, and protection.
  • Trusting in God:Ezra’s act of fasting and prayer demonstrates his trust in God’s faithfulness and provision. By committing their journey into God’s hands, they acknowledged their reliance on Him. As believers, we are called to trust in God’s promises and His ability to answer our prayers according to His perfect will.

Application:

  • Seeking God’s guidance:Whenever we face important decisions or challenges, we should follow Ezra’s example and seek God’s guidance through fasting and prayer. By humbling ourselves before Him and seeking His wisdom, we can make decisions that align with His will.
  • Trusting in God’s protection:Just as Ezra trusted in God’s protection during their journey, we should trust in God’s faithfulness in our lives. Regardless of the challenges or dangers we may face, we can rely on God’s unfailing love and seek His protection.
  • Expressing dependence on God:Fasting and prayer remind us of our dependence on God. They help us cultivate a spirit of humility and reliance on Him, acknowledging that we cannot accomplish things in our own strength.
  • Reflecting on answered prayers:When God answers our prayers, we should take time to reflect and give thanks. Recognising His faithfulness in the past strengthens our faith for the future.

Remember, studying the Bible is not just about gaining knowledge but also about applying its principles in our lives and growing in our relationship with God.
