Galatians 1:15

Listen to this article

“But when it pleased God, who separated me from my mother’s womb, and called me by his grace.”

Context:The book of Galatians was written by the apostle Paul to the churches in the region of Galatia. In this letter, Paul addresses the issue of false teachers who were spreading a distorted gospel and leading the Galatians astray. He emphasizes the importance of salvation by grace through faith in Jesus Christ alone, without the need for adhering to the works of the law.

Divine Election:In Galatians 1:15, Paul speaks about his calling and election by God. He affirms that it pleased God to separate him from his mother’s womb and call him by His grace. This verse highlights the divine initiative in Paul’s conversion and ministry. It emphasizes that God had a specific plan and purpose for Paul even before he was born. Paul’s encounter with Jesus on the road to Damascus (Acts 9) was a pivotal moment that marked his separation and calling by God.

God’s Sovereign Will:The phrase “when it pleased God” underscores the sovereignty of God. It reveals that God’s actions are not bound by human expectations or constraints. God’s will and timing are perfect, and He orchestrates events according to His divine purposes. Paul’s conversion was not a random occurrence but a part of God’s sovereign plan for the advancement of the Gospel.

Divine Grace:Paul acknowledges that his calling was not based on his own merit or worthiness but solely on God’s grace. God’s grace is His unmerited favour and kindness extended toward sinners. Paul, who had persecuted Christians before his conversion, recognizes the tremendous grace of God in calling him to be an apostle. This emphasizes the truth that salvation and ministry are not earned by human effort but are gifts from God.

Application:Galatians 1:15 serves as a reminder that God has a purpose and a calling for each of His followers. Like Paul, we are called by God’s grace to fulfil His divine plan in our lives. It is important to recognize that our salvation and the work we do for God are not based on our own abilities or achievements but on God’s sovereign will and His unmerited favour.

  • Furthermore, this verse encourages us to trust in God’s timing and to be open to His leading. God’s plans for us may not always align with our own expectations, but we can have confidence that His purposes are good and perfect. We should seek to discern His will through prayer, study of His Word, and guidance from the Holy Spirit.

In conclusion, Galatians 1:15 highlights God’s sovereignty, His gracious calling, and His perfect timing in the life of the apostle Paul. It serves as a reminder for us to embrace God’s calling with humility, trust in His grace, and surrender to His divine plan for our lives.
