Galatians 3:24

Posted on 18 May at 14:30

“Wherefore the law was our schoolmaster to bring us unto Christ, that we might be justified by faith.”

Galatians 3:24 (KJV) states:

The book of Galatians was written by the apostle Paul to the churches in Galatia, addressing issues of legalism and the relationship between faith and the law. In this particular verse, Paul explains the purpose of the law and its role in leading people to Christ.

Context:The book of Galatians was written by the apostle Paul to the churches in Galatia, addressing issues of legalism and the relationship between faith and the law. In this particular verse, Paul explains the purpose of the law and its role in leading people to Christ.

Meaning:a. “Wherefore the law was our schoolmaster”: The “law” refers to the Old Testament law given to the Israelites, particularly the Mosaic Law. The term “schoolmaster” can also be translated as “tutor” or “guardian.” Paul is metaphorically describing the law as a disciplinarian or tutor who had the responsibility of educating and guiding the Israelites until the coming of Christ.

b. “To bring us unto Christ”: The primary purpose of the law, according to Paul, was to lead people to Christ. The law revealed God’s standards and showed humanity’s inability to fulfill them perfectly. It highlighted our need for a Savior and pointed to the coming of Jesus Christ, who fulfilled the law perfectly.

c. “That we might be justified by faith”: The law cannot justify or save anyone. Instead, it serves as a means to reveal our need for salvation. Justification refers to being declared righteous or right in God’s sight. Paul emphasizes that justification comes through faith in Christ rather than through obedience to the law. It is by faith in Jesus and His sacrificial work on the cross that we are justified and receive salvation.

Application:

  • The insufficiency of the law:The law, while holy and good, cannot save us or make us righteous before God. It reveals our shortcomings and the need for a Savior. As believers, we should not rely on our own efforts to earn salvation but rather trust in the finished work of Christ.
  • The role of the law:Although we are no longer under the law as a means of salvation, it still has value. The law teaches us about God’s character, reveals His standards, and convicts us of sin. It can guide our moral and ethical conduct as we seek to live in obedience to God.
  • Justification by faith:Our faith in Jesus Christ is the basis of our justification. We are declared righteous because of His atoning sacrifice, not because of our works. Our salvation is a gift of God’s grace received through faith.
  • Freedom in Christ:The message of Galatians emphasizes freedom from legalistic observances and the freedom to live by the Spirit. We are called to walk in the Spirit, bearing the fruit of the Spirit, and relying on God’s grace rather than trying to earn righteousness through the law.

In summary, Galatians 3:24 highlights the temporary role of the law in leading people to Christ. It emphasizes the sufficiency of faith in Jesus for justification and reminds us of the freedom we have in Him.
