Listen to this article

The sonnes of Iaphet: Gomer, and Magog, and Madai, and Iauan, & Tubal, and Meshech, & Tiras. Genesis 10:2 (KJV)

This verse is part of the genealogy of the sons of Noah, specifically focusing on the descendants of Japheth. It provides a list of the names of Japheth’s sons.

Gomer: Gomer is mentioned elsewhere in Scripture. In Ezekiel 38:6 he is listed among the nations that will join the forces of Gog of Magog in the end‑times conflict. Some scholars identify Gomer with the Cimmerians or with peoples of the northern regions of Asia Minor.

Magog: Magog appears in Ezekiel 38:2‑3 and in Revelation 20:7‑8, where he is associated with a future invasion against God’s people. Although the precise identity of Magog remains uncertain, the name is generally understood to denote a nation or peoples from the far north.

Madai: Madai is commonly understood to represent the Medes, an ancient Iranian people whose empire was later overtaken by the Persians. The Medes played a significant role in the history of the Near East.

Javan: Javan refers to the descendants of Javan, who are traditionally identified with the Greeks. The biblical use of “Javan” often serves as a reference to Greece or the Greek‑speaking world.

Tubal and Meshech: Tubal and Meshech are frequently mentioned together, for example in Ezekiel 38:2. They are generally associated with regions of Asia Minor, corresponding to modern‑day Turkey. While some alternative identifications have been proposed, they are not widely accepted.

Tiras: Tiras is the least well‑known of Japheth’s sons, and his exact identification is uncertain. Some scholars suggest that Tiras may represent various peoples of the Mediterranean region.

It is important to note that this verse primarily serves as a genealogical record, providing a list of the descendants of Japheth. These names reflect the diverse nations and peoples that emerged from Japheth’s line, and several of them play notable roles in biblical prophecies concerning the end times.
