Genesis 13:7

Posted on 15 July 2023
Listen to this article

“And there was a strife between the herdmen of Abram’s cattle and the herdmen of Lot’s cattle: and the Canaanite and the Perizzite dwelled then in the land.”

This verse is a part of the narrative of Abram (later known as Abraham) and his nephew Lot. After both Abram and Lot accumulated substantial wealth, including livestock, conflicts arose between their respective herdsmen. This verse sets the context for the tensions and disputes that arose among the herdsmen.

This verse also mentions the presence of the Canaanites and the Perizzites in the land during that time. The Canaanites and Perizzites were among the many Canaanite tribes inhabiting the land of Canaan, which later became the Promised Land for the Israelites. Their presence is highlighted to emphasize that Abram and Lot were not the only inhabitants in the area.

This passage provides us with a few key insights that we can reflect upon:

  • Conflict among believers:Despite being relatives, Abram and Lot faced a situation where their herdsmen were engaged in strife. This incident reminds us that even among people who share a common faith, conflicts and disputes can arise. It serves as a reminder to handle disagreements in a God-honoring manner and seek resolution with humility and wisdom.
  • Material possessions and disputes:The conflict in this passage was primarily centered around material possessions, specifically their cattle and wealth. It reminds us of the potential dangers of wealth and possessions, which can sometimes lead to disputes and division among people. As believers, we should be mindful not to allow material possessions to become a source of contention or discord.
  • Coexistence with non-believers:The verse mentions the presence of the Canaanites and the Perizzites in the land. This serves as a reminder that believers may find themselves living among those who do not share their faith. In such situations, we are called to be a light to those around us, living out our faith in a way that reflects God’s love and truth.

Overall, Genesis 13:7 teaches us important lessons about handling conflicts, avoiding the pitfalls of material possessions, and living as believers in the midst of a diverse world.
