Genesis 14:22

Listen to this article

And Abram said to the King of Sodome, I haue lift vp my hand vnto the LORD, the most high God, the possessour of heauen and earth, Genesis 14:22 (KJV)

In Genesis 14 we read of a coalition of kings waging war, during which Abram’s nephew Lot and his possessions are captured. Abram gathers his trained servants, defeats the hostile kings, rescues Lot, and recovers the lost goods. After this decisive victory he meets the king of Sodom, and it is in that moment that he declares, “I have lifted up mine hand unto the LORD, the most high God, the possessor and King of heaven and earth.”

Abram’s acknowledgement of God

Abram explicitly identifies the LORD as the most high God, the possessor—and indeed the King—of heaven and earth. This confession affirms God’s supreme sovereignty over all creation and underscores that Abram attributes his triumph to divine providence rather than to human might.

Lift up mine hand

The phrase “I have lifted up mine hand” was a common idiom for swearing an oath or making a solemn promise. By raising his hand Abram publicly binds himself to the Lord, signaling that his word is given in God’s presence and that he will honor whatever commitment he is making.

Abram’s loyalty to God

Through these words Abram demonstrates unwavering loyalty. He refuses the spoils offered by the king of Sodom, insisting that any blessing he receives comes directly from God. This stance prevents any accusation that he has profited from human sources or owes allegiance to earthly rulers. Abram makes it clear that his success and future blessings are rooted solely in the LORD’s favor.

Application

Genesis 14:22 calls believers to recognize God as the source of every victory and blessing. It urges us to give credit where it is due, to avoid compromising our devotion by seeking worldly gain, and to trust wholly in God’s provision. When success comes, we should attribute it to the Lord and remain faithful, refusing to let earthly incentives sway our allegiance.

Conclusion

Abram’s declaration highlights the LORD’s sovereignty and his own commitment to serve the most high God as the possessor and King of heaven and earth. The passage reminds us to honor God as the ultimate source of all blessings and to maintain steadfast loyalty to Him in every circumstance.
