Genesis 17:14

And the uncircumcised man child whose flesh of his foreskin is not circumcised, that soul shall be cut off from his people; he hath broken my covenant.

Genesis 17:14 (KJV)

This verse belongs to God’s covenant with Abraham in Genesis 17. God promised to make Abraham the father of many nations and to bless his descendants. Circumcision was given as the physical sign of this everlasting covenant, applying to every male in Abraham’s household, including servants bought with money.

The command is direct: any uncircumcised male who has not received the sign in his flesh has broken the covenant and must be cut off from his people. This exclusion shows how seriously God regarded the covenant sign. Neglecting it was not a small failure but a deliberate rejection of the relationship God had established.

The New Testament clarifies that physical circumcision is not the ultimate requirement. Galatians 5:6 teaches that in Christ Jesus neither circumcision nor uncircumcision matters, but faith working through love. Similarly, 1 Corinthians 7:19 says keeping God’s commandments is what counts. The prophets also pointed to a deeper need: Jeremiah 4:4 calls for circumcision of the heart, and Romans 2:29 explains that true circumcision is of the heart, by the Spirit, not by the letter.

For believers today, this verse teaches that God’s covenant demands a visible, obedient response. The outward sign has changed, but the principle remains: faith must show itself in faithful living. A heart devoted to God is the true mark of belonging to His people.

Consider whether your life bears the spiritual sign of belonging to God. Obedience is not about ritual alone but about a sincere heart that honors Him.
