Genesis 18:12

Listen to this article

Therefore Sarah laughed within her selfe, saying, After I am waxed old, shall I haue pleasure, my lord being old also? Genesis 18:12 (KJV)

This verse occurs when Sarah, Abraham’s wife, overhears the three men who have come to visit Abraham discussing the promise that she would bear a son. At that moment both Abraham and Sarah were advanced in years, and Sarah had never been able to conceive. The news that she would bear a child prompts an inward laugh, revealing her doubt and incredulity because of their old age.

Sarah’s Doubt: Her laughter is a clear indication of disbelief. It highlights the human tendency to question God’s promises when circumstances appear impossible. Given her advanced age and the biological improbability of conception, her reaction is understandable and reflects a natural response to what seems beyond natural possibility.

God’s Faithfulness: Despite Sarah’s doubt, God remains steadfast to His word. In the following verses He confronts her laughter, reaffirms the promise, and reminds her that nothing is too difficult for Him. The birth of a child in old age is presented as within God’s power, underscoring His reliability even when human expectations fail.

Lessons in Faith: The exchange teaches that questioning and doubt are natural, yet it also calls believers to surrender those doubts and trust in God’s sovereignty. God’s response serves as a reminder that He can fulfill His promises regardless of how unlikely the situation may seem to human eyes.

Overall, Genesis 18:12 reminds us that even in moments of doubt we can rely on God’s faithfulness. It encourages believers to place their confidence in Him, trusting that He is able to accomplish His promises even when circumstances appear unfavorable or impossible.
