Peraduenture there be fifty righteous within the citie; wilt thou also destroy, and not spare the place for the fiftie righteous, that are therein? Genesis 18:24 (KJV)

In Genesis 18 we find the account of God’s visitation to Abraham near the Oaks of Mamre. While Abraham was sitting at the entrance of his tent, three men appeared and he extended his hospitality to them. One of these visitors was the LORD (Yahweh), and the other two were later identified as angels (see Genesis 19:1).

During this visit the men warned Abraham of the forthcoming judgment on Sodom and Gomorrah because of the grievous sins of their inhabitants. Aware that his nephew Lot was living in Sodom, Abraham began to intercede on behalf of the cities. He recognized God’s righteousness and justice yet appealed for mercy, asking whether God would destroy the righteous together with the wicked. He then proposed the possibility that even fifty righteous people might be found in the city.

Genesis 18:24 records God’s response: if He finds fifty righteous within Sodom, He will spare the whole place. This exchange captures Abraham’s deep concern for the innocent living among the wicked and illustrates God’s willingness to consider the presence of a few righteous individuals when deciding judgment.

The passage teaches several enduring lessons. First, Abraham’s intercession shows a profound concern for righteousness and justice, reminding believers to care for the welfare of the righteous and to seek their protection. Second, the dialogue reflects God’s character as both merciful and just; He is ready to spare a city for the sake of a few righteous people, yet He also upholds justice when the required number is lacking. Third, the episode demonstrates the power of intercessory prayer—God is open to dialogue and willing to hear the petitions of His faithful servants. Finally, the willingness of God to spare an entire city for the sake of a few underscores His immense patience, mercy, and desire to save as many as possible from destruction.

Overall, Genesis 18:24 highlights Abraham’s boldness in pleading for others, showcases God’s mercy and justice, and encourages believers to approach God in prayer, seeking His compassion while caring for the well‑being of others.
