Genesis 24:1

And Abraham was old, and well stricken in age: and the Lord had blessed Abraham in all things.

Genesis 24:1 (KJV)

This verse opens a new chapter in Genesis. Abraham is very old, and the time has come to secure a wife for Isaac, his promised son. The account that follows shows Abraham sending his servant to find a wife from his own relatives, not from the Canaanites. This careful step protected the covenant line that God had established with Abraham.

The phrase “old, and well stricken in age” points to Abraham’s advanced years. Isaac was born when Abraham was one hundred years old, and Isaac was forty when he married Rebekah. So Abraham was about one hundred and forty years old here. His age made the matter urgent, because the continuation of God’s covenant depended on Isaac having a godly wife.

The second part of the verse says that the Lord had blessed Abraham in all things. This is a summary of God’s faithful care over many years. The blessing included land, descendants, and material wealth, but it also included spiritual favour. God had guided Abraham, protected him, and kept every promise made to him. This comprehensive blessing covered both temporal and spiritual aspects of life, showing that God’s care was not limited to one area.

God’s promise to Abraham included making him a great nation and blessing all families of the earth through him (Genesis 12:2-3). That promise moved forward through Isaac, the child of promise. Abraham’s care in choosing a wife for Isaac shows his trust that God would keep His word. The line leading to the Messiah, Jesus Christ, depended on this marriage.

This verse encourages believers to trust God’s faithfulness in every part of life. Abraham did not know how God would provide a wife for Isaac, but he acted wisely and prayed for guidance. In seasons of uncertainty, especially in old age, God remains faithful to His promises. Believers can seek His direction in personal decisions, knowing that He cares about details.

God’s blessing is not limited to wealth or success. It covers every area of life, including family, purpose, and spiritual growth. Abraham’s example reminds readers that obedience to God’s covenant brings lasting fruit. Even when the future seems unclear, God’s plan is sure and His timing is perfect.
