Genesis 24:30
And it came to passe when he saw the eare-ring, and bracelets vpon his sisters hands, and when hee heard the wordes of Rebekah his sister, saying, Thus spake the man vnto me, that he came vnto the man; and behold, hee stood by the camels, at the well. Genesis 24:30 (KJV)
The narrative begins in Genesis 24, where Abraham instructs his servant to find a wife for Isaac from his own people rather than from the Canaanites. The servant took an oath to carry out his master’s wishes faithfully. He traveled to the city of Nahor, where Abraham’s relatives resided, to find a suitable bride for Isaac. He prayed for a sign, asking that the woman who would offer water to his camels be the one God chose (Genesis 24:12‑14). As he arrived near the well, he saw a group of women drawing water. Rebekah, a relative of Abraham, came forward and offered him a drink, and also drew water for his camels (Genesis 24:18‑20).
The servant’s encounter with Rebekah: As the servant stood by the well outside the city, Rebekah arrived to draw water. He gave her jewelry, including an earring and bracelets, after she offered water for him and his camels. After she had finished, the servant presented her with a gold earring and two bracelets, as recorded in Genesis 24:22. The significance of the jewelry lies in the servant’s act of giving a gift, not as a pre‑arranged sign. Laban, Rebekah’s brother, noticed her wearing jewelry, including an earring and bracelets. Genesis 24:30 describes the servant’s response upon seeing Rebekah, who would eventually become Isaac’s wife. The quoted sentence, “And it came to pass, when he saw the earring and bracelets upon his sister’s hands…,” does not appear in Genesis. In Genesis 24:22 (KJV) the text reads: “And when the camels had done drinking, the man took a golden earring, and two bracelets of gold, and gave them into the hand of the daughter of Bethuel….”
God’s guidance and faithfulness: This passage highlights God’s faithfulness in guiding the servant to Rebekah. The servant had prayed for a specific sign, and Rebekah’s actions fulfilled that request. God’s providence is evident in the sequence of events, demonstrating His active involvement in the process of finding a suitable wife for Isaac, ensuring the continuation of the covenant made with Abraham. This passage demonstrates God’s providence in directing the servant to Rebekah through the fulfillment of the specific sign he requested. Overall, Genesis 24:30 illustrates the recognition of the signs God had provided, which led to Rebekah becoming Isaac’s wife. It highlights the faithfulness of God in answering prayers and guiding His people. The story serves as a reminder of the importance of seeking God’s guidance and relying on His faithfulness in our own lives. The story underscores the importance of seeking divine guidance and trusting that God will provide according to His promises.
