And I came this day vnto the well, and said, O LORD God of my master Abraham, if now thou doe prosper my way, which I goe: Genesis 24:42 (KJV)

Genesis 24 records how Abraham’s servant was commissioned to find a wife for Isaac, Abraham’s son. The servant journeys to the region of Nahor in Mesopotamia, arrives at a well, and there meets Rebekah. In the course of his mission he offers a prayer to God, asking that the Lord would guide him to the right woman for Isaac.

In verse 42 the servant recounts to Rebekah’s family that on the day he came to the well he prayed to the “LORD God of my master Abraham,” invoking the God of Israel for success in his journey. He acknowledges that it is God who can prosper and guide his way.

The passage highlights the servant’s deep trust in God’s guidance. By seeking the Lord’s favour, he admits that success ultimately depends on divine intervention rather than his own effort, emphasizing the importance of relying on God’s direction and seeking His will in our own lives.

The servant’s reference to God as the “LORD God of my master Abraham” recognises God’s sovereignty and authority over Abraham’s household. This title underscores the servant’s awareness that he is accountable to God and that he seeks God’s blessing and favour in carrying out his duties.

The prayer itself demonstrates prayer as a means of communication with God. By lifting his request to the Lord, the servant shows his dependence on Him and his belief that God has the power to answer his prayer.

His request that God “prosper my way which I go” reveals an awareness of God’s providential care. He understands that the success of finding a suitable wife for Isaac rests in God’s hands, highlighting the belief in divine intervention and the involvement of God in the details of our lives.

Overall, Genesis 24:42 showcases the servant’s trust in God’s guidance, his acknowledgement of God’s authority, and the importance of prayer and seeking God’s will. It serves as a reminder for believers to rely on God’s wisdom, to seek His direction in our journeys, and to trust in His providential care.
