And she say to me, Both drinke thou, and I will also draw for thy camels: let the same be the woman, whō the LORD hath appointed out for my masters sonne. Genesis 24:44 (KJV)

This verse is part of the account of Abraham’s servant seeking a wife for Isaac. In this chapter Abraham’s servant is sent on a mission to find a wife for Isaac from among Abraham’s relatives. The servant prays to God for guidance and devises a test to identify the woman whom the Lord has appointed for Isaac. When he arrives at the town of Nahor he encounters Rebekah at the well. The servant asks her for a drink, and she generously offers to draw water for his camels as well.

Genesis 24:44 is part of the servant’s report to Rebekah’s family, where he explains his encounter with her at the well. He recounts how Rebekah not only offered him a drink but also volunteered to draw water for his camels. This act of kindness and hospitality stood out to the servant as a sign from God, indicating that Rebekah was the woman chosen by the Lord to be Isaac’s wife.

The passage reveals several key themes. Divine Providence is highlighted as the servant recognizes that God has orchestrated this encounter and is guiding his steps, attributing Rebekah’s actions to the Lord’s appointment and affirming that God has a plan and is actively involved in the lives of His people. Hospitality and Generosity are shown in Rebekah’s willingness to go above and beyond in showing kindness to a stranger and his camels, demonstrating the biblical value of caring for others even when we do not know them. Marriage and God’s Guidance are emphasized by the story’s focus on seeking divine direction in important decisions, especially marriage; the servant sought the Lord’s leading through prayer and received confirmation through Rebekah’s actions, underscoring that God is interested in the details of our relationships and that seeking His guidance is essential.

Overall Genesis 24:44 portrays a pivotal moment in the story of Isaac and Rebekah, highlighting divine providence, hospitality, and the importance of seeking God’s guidance in significant life decisions. It serves as a reminder of God’s involvement in our lives and the value of extending kindness and generosity to others.
