Genesis 24:46
And she made haste, & let downe her pitcher from her shoulder, and saide, Drinke, and I will giue thy camels drinke also: so I dranke, and she made the camels drinke also. Genesis 24:46 (KJV)
This verse is part of the account of Abraham’s servant’s journey to find a wife for Isaac. Abraham had instructed his servant to travel to his ancestral region and find a wife for his son Isaac from among his own kin, rather than from the Canaanites among whom they lived.
When the servant arrived in the city of Nahor, he prayed to God for a specific sign to identify the woman who would be the chosen bride for Isaac. He asked that the woman who would offer him a drink from her pitcher and also water his camels be the one God selected.
Rebekah, the daughter of Bethuel—who was the son of Nahor, Abraham’s brother—appeared at the well as the servant was praying and fulfilled this sign. She not only gave the servant a drink but also offered to water his camels. This was a significant act of hospitality and kindness, as camels require a large amount of water. The passage highlights Rebekah’s generous nature and willingness to go above and beyond to serve others.
The lesson of hospitality and kindness is clear: Rebekah’s actions demonstrate the importance of showing hospitality and kindness to others. She willingly provided water not only for the servant but also for his camels, demonstrating self‑lessness and generosity. The servant’s prayer for a specific sign was answered by God, reminding us of the faithfulness of God in answering prayers and guiding decisions. Abraham’s servant sought God’s guidance in finding a suitable wife for Isaac, and through the sign and Rebekah’s actions it became clear that God orchestrated their meeting, emphasizing the importance of seeking divine guidance in relationships and decisions. Rebekah’s willingness to provide water for the camels shows its dedication and readiness to exceed expectations, serving others with a joyful and generous heart.
Overall, Genesis 24:45‑46 showcases the virtue of hospitality, God’s faithfulness in guiding our paths, and the significance of exceeding expectations to serve others.
