Genesis 24:54
And they did eat and drink, he and the men that were with him, and tarried all night; and they rose up in the morning, and he said, Send me away unto my master.
Genesis 24:54 (KJV)
Context
Abraham sent his servant to find a wife for Isaac. The servant traveled to Nahor and prayed for a sign. God answered by leading him to Rebekah. In this verse, the servant and his men have just finished a meal and a night’s rest at her family’s home. This hospitality was a sign of honor and friendship in the ancient Near East.
Meaning
The phrase “they did eat and drink” shows the generous welcome Rebekah’s family gave. In that culture, offering food and shelter was a serious commitment to a guest’s well-being. The servant’s request, “Send me away unto my master,” reveals his urgent sense of duty. He does not delay even though he is comfortable. His mission is complete, and he wants to report to Abraham. The servant’s urgency is not rudeness; it is a clear priority. He recognizes that God has prospered his journey, so he does not linger.
Biblical connections
The servant’s obedience mirrors Abraham’s own faith. Abraham trusted God to provide a wife for Isaac, and the servant trusted God to guide his journey. In the next verse, the family asks Rebekah to stay longer, but the servant insists on leaving because the Lord has prospered his way (Genesis 24:56). This connection shows that God’s clear leading should be followed promptly. The broader chapter also shows God’s faithfulness in fulfilling His promise to Abraham through the covenant line.
Application
This verse teaches that hospitality is a practical way to honor God and serve others. It also challenges believers to recognize when God has answered prayer and to act without hesitation. The servant did not let comfort or social pressure keep him from his task. When God makes His will clear, faithful service means moving forward. This may require leaving a pleasant situation or declining a kind offer, as the servant did.
Reflection
Consider how God has guided you in important decisions. Are you quick to obey when He shows the way, or do you linger? The servant’s example encourages a heart that is eager to fulfill God’s calling, even when it means leaving a pleasant place. His diligence and obedience model a faithful response to divine guidance.
