Genesis 24:64

And Rebekah lifted up her eyes, and when she saw Isaac, she lighted off the camel.

Genesis 24:64 (KJV)

Genesis 24 tells how Abraham sent his servant to find a wife for Isaac. The servant prayed for a sign, and God answered by bringing Rebekah to the well. She showed kindness and agreed to leave her home. As the journey ended, Rebekah saw Isaac for the first time. This moment is the climax of a long journey of faith. Rebekah had trusted the servant’s words and the Lord’s leading. Now she would meet the man God had prepared for her.

Rebekah “lifted up her eyes” and saw Isaac. This phrase shows her anticipation and readiness. She had trusted God’s guidance through the servant, and now she saw the one God had prepared for her. Her action of lighting off the camel was a sign of respect and humility before Isaac, recognizing him as her future husband. In that culture, dismounting was a customary way to honor someone. It was not a small gesture. It showed that she understood the importance of this meeting. Her response was both expectant and humble.

Isaac is the promised son of Abraham and Sarah. He is a type of Christ, the beloved Son who brings salvation. Rebekah’s meeting with Isaac foreshadows the relationship between Christ and the Church. This typology is a scholarly interpretation, not a direct doctrine. The immediate context also shows Isaac lifting up his eyes to see the camels coming, so both saw each other by divine appointment. This mutual recognition highlights the theme of God’s providence. God had answered the servant’s prayer and guided every step. The meeting was not by chance but by divine design.

Rebekah’s example teaches faith and obedience. She left her family and followed the servant’s instructions. In our lives, we are called to trust God’s guidance, even when it means leaving our comfort zones. We should lift up our eyes to see God’s provision and respond with humble submission. This applies to major decisions, relationships, and daily steps of obedience. When God opens a door, we must be ready to move forward. Like Rebekah, we can show respect for those God places in our path. Her willingness to leave her home reminds us that faith often requires sacrifice.

Consider how God has guided you to this moment. Are you ready to see His provision and respond with faith? Rebekah’s action reminds us that true faith is active. It looks beyond present circumstances and embraces the future God has prepared. Her example calls us to be spiritually attentive. We must keep our eyes open to see what God is doing. Then we must respond with humility and trust, knowing that He who began a good work will complete it.
