Genesis 26:14
For he had possession of flocks, and possession of heards, and great store of seruants, and the Philistims enuied him. Genesis 26:14 (KJV)
The narrative of Genesis 26:14 unfolds against the backdrop of a severe famine in the land of Gerar. Confronted with scarcity, Isaac, the son of Abraham, sought the Lord’s guidance. In response, God reaffirmed the promise made to Abraham, assuring Isaac that He would bless him in the very place where he sojourned (Genesis 26:2‑5). Though the famine persisted, Isaac’s obedience and reliance on God’s word set the stage for a remarkable display of divine provision.
Isaac’s material blessings are highlighted by the verse’s explicit mention of his “possession of flocks, and possession of herds, and great store of servants.” In the ancient Near East, livestock represented wealth, security, and divine favor. The surrounding verses (Genesis 26:12‑13) describe how Isaac sowed and reaped a hundredfold, and how his flocks and herds multiplied beyond expectation. The increase in servants indicates that his household expanded to manage the growing assets, underscoring the comprehensive nature of God’s blessing.
The Philistines, neighboring peoples who observed Isaac’s prosperity amid the famine, “envied him.” Later verses (Genesis 26:17‑19) record that they became angry because Isaac’s wealth, especially his abundant livestock, continued to increase. Their resentment illustrates a natural human reaction to the evident favor God bestowed on Isaac, even when others were suffering.
From this account emerge three enduring lessons. First, God’s faithfulness endures: He keeps His promises and provides abundantly, even in adverse circumstances. Second, divine blessing can provoke envy or hostility; believers must remain steadfast, walking in integrity while trusting God’s provision. Third, the appropriate response to God’s gifts is contentment and gratitude. Rather than coveting what others lack, we are called to thank the Lord for His steadfast love and the prosperity He graciously grants.
