Genesis 28:7

Posted on 27 July 2023
Listen to this article

And that Iacob obeyed his father, and his mother, and was gone to Padan-Aram; Genesis 28:7 (KJV)

The verse is situated within the larger narrative of Jacob, the son of Isaac and grandson of Abraham. Earlier, in Genesis 27, Jacob deceived his father Isaac to obtain the blessing intended for his brother Esau. This act provoked Esau’s anger and a threat on Jacob’s life. To protect their son and to find a suitable wife for him among their relatives, Isaac and Rebekah sent Jacob away to the land of Haran, also referred to as Padan‑aram.

Obedience to Parents

Genesis 28:7 highlights Jacob’s willingness to obey the instructions of his father Isaac and his mother Rebekah. Despite the controversy surrounding the stolen blessing and the danger that followed, Jacob chose to follow their counsel and depart for a foreign land. The passage underscores the biblical principle of honoring and obeying one’s parents, recognizing the wisdom and guidance they provide.

Consequences of Deceit

The events leading to Jacob’s departure serve as a reminder that deceit carries serious repercussions. Jacob’s deception strained his relationship with Esau and created tension within the family. The narrative warns that honesty and integrity must be the foundation of our interactions, lest we invite conflict and division.

God’s Guidance and Providence

Jacob’s journey to Haran/Padan‑aram is woven into God’s covenantal plan to multiply the descendants of Abraham and Isaac. In the verses that follow, Jacob experiences a profound dream of a ladder reaching to heaven, confirming God’s presence, guidance, and promise. Even amid uncertainty and the fallout of his actions, Jacob discovers that God remains faithful, providing direction and support.

God’s Plan Through Family Dynamics

The passage illustrates how God works through ordinary people and complex family relationships to fulfill His purposes. The patriarchal lineage, though marked by imperfections, becomes the conduit for the covenant to be carried forward across generations.

Practical Application

Believers are encouraged to honor and obey their parents, seeking counsel that aligns with God’s will. They are also reminded that deception damages relationships and spiritual growth, urging a commitment to truthfulness. When facing the consequences of past choices, Christians can trust in God’s steadfast faithfulness, seeking His guidance in times of uncertainty. Finally, recognizing that God can use everyday individuals and tangled family dynamics to accomplish His divine agenda invites believers to remain attentive to how He is at work in their own lives and relationships.

Studying the surrounding chapters provides a fuller picture of the narrative and its theological implications, enriching our understanding of obedience, integrity, and divine providence.
