Genesis 30:42

Listen to this article

“But when the cattle were feeble, he put them not in: so the feebler were Laban’s, and the stronger Jacob’s.”

Genesis 30:42 (KJV) This verse is part of the narrative in the book of Genesis that describes the events surrounding Jacob’s time with his uncle Laban.

Jacob had been working for Laban for a period of twenty years, and during this time, he had acquired wealth in the form of livestock.

In this particular verse, the context is that Jacob had devised a breeding strategy to increase his own flock.

He had noticed that Laban’s flock was stronger and healthier, while his own flock was weaker.

To remedy this situation, Jacob placed the stronger animals in front of the weaker ones while they were breeding.

This was a practice that was believed to influence the appearance and strength of the offspring.

As a result of Jacob’s selective breeding technique, the stronger animals gave birth to stronger offspring, and the weaker animals gave birth to weaker offspring.

Consequently, Jacob’s flock grew stronger, while Laban’s flock remained weaker.

This verse serves as a demonstration of Jacob’s resourcefulness and ingenuity in managing his livestock:It also illustrates the providence and blessing of God upon Jacob’s efforts.

Jacob’s success in building his own flock can be seen as part of God’s fulfillment of the promise made to him earlier in Genesis 28:14, where God said, “And thy seed shall be as the dust of the earth, and thou shalt spread abroad to the west, and to the east, and to the north, and to the south: and in thee and in thy seed shall all the families of the earth be blessed.”

From a broader perspective, this verse highlights the theme of God’s faithfulness to His promises:Despite the challenges Jacob faced while working for Laban, God remained with him and blessed him, enabling him to prosper and fulfill the destiny God had set before him.

In conclusion, Genesis 30:42 demonstrates Jacob’s strategic approach to breeding his flock and the resulting increase in his own wealth.

It also emphasizes God’s faithfulness to His promises and His involvement in Jacob’s life.
