But when the cattel were feeble, hee put them not in: so the feebler were Labans, and the stronger Iacobs. Genesis 30:42 (KJV)

“But when the cattle were feeble, he put them not in: so the feebler were Laban’s, and the stronger Jacob’s.” This verse is part of the narrative in Genesis that describes the events surrounding Jacob’s time with his uncle Laban. Jacob had been working for Laban for twenty years, and during that period he acquired wealth in the form of livestock. In this verse the context is that Jacob had devised a breeding strategy to increase his own flock. According to Genesis 30:41 (KJV), Jacob laid rods in the watering troughs for the cattle to see during mating: “And it came to pass, whensoever the stronger cattle did conceive, that Jacob laid the rods before the eyes of the cattle in the gutters, that they might conceive among the rods.” As a result of Jacob’s method, the stronger animals gave birth to stronger offspring, and the weaker animals gave birth to weaker offspring. Consequently, Jacob’s flock grew stronger, while Laban’s flock remained weaker. This passage demonstrates Jacob’s resourcefulness and ingenuity in managing his livestock and illustrates the providence and blessing of God upon Jacob’s efforts. Jacob’s success in building his own flock can be seen as part of God’s fulfillment of the promise made earlier in Genesis 28:14, where God said, “And thy seed shall be as the dust of the earth, and thou shalt spread abroad to the west, and to the east, … and in thee and in thy seed shall all the families of the earth be blessed.” From a broader perspective the verse highlights the theme of God’s faithfulness to His promises. Despite the challenges Jacob faced while working for Laban, God remained with him and blessed him, enabling him to prosper and fulfill the destiny set before him. In conclusion, Genesis 30:42 demonstrates Jacob’s strategic approach to breeding his flock, the resulting increase in his own wealth, and underscores God’s continual involvement and faithfulness in Jacob’s life.
