Genesis 31:39
That which was torne of beasts, I brought not vnto thee: I bare the losse of it; of my hand didst thou require it, whether stollen by day, or stollen by night. Genesis 31:39 (KJV)
In Genesis 31 we find Jacob fleeing from Laban’s household with his wives, children, and possessions. Jacob’s departure is motivated by several factors, including Laban’s mistreatment, jealousy, and an angelic message from God instructing Jacob to return to his homeland (Genesis 31:1‑3). Prior to Jacob’s escape, Laban had repeatedly changed Jacob’s wages and attempted to manipulate him. Jacob explains to his wives, Rachel and Leah, how he had faithfully served Laban for twenty years, enduring harsh conditions, extreme weather, and the loss of his sleep while tending Laban’s flocks (Genesis 31:4‑16).
Jacob says, “That which was torn of beasts I brought not unto thee; I bare the loss of it; of my hand didst thou require it, whether stolen by day, or stolen by night.” In this part of the verse Jacob explains that whenever an animal was killed by a wild beast, he did not bring it to Laban, indicating that he personally bore the financial loss resulting from such incidents. He also acknowledges that if any animal was stolen from the flock, Laban would hold him accountable and demand reimbursement, whether the theft occurred by day or by night.
Responsibility and integrity are highlighted as Jacob exemplifies personal responsibility and integrity by assuming the financial burden of lost or stolen livestock. He did not shirk his responsibilities or pass the blame onto others. Faithfulness despite adversity is shown as Jacob remained faithful to his obligations even though Laban mistreated him and constantly changed his wages. His steadfastness reveals his trust in God’s provision, recognizing that God was with him and would take care of him regardless of the circumstances. Jacob’s commitment to honesty and responsibility sets an example for his family and for believers, calling us to exhibit similar qualities in our relationships and dealings with others.
The passage encourages us to uphold principles of responsibility, integrity, and faithfulness in our lives. We should take personal responsibility for our actions and not shy away from the consequences of our choices. Even when faced with adversity or unfair treatment, we can trust in God’s provision and remain faithful to our commitments. By exhibiting integrity and honesty we can inspire others to follow suit and glorify God through our actions.
In summary, Genesis 31:39 highlights Jacob’s honesty, personal responsibility, and faithfulness despite the challenging circumstances he faced while serving Laban, and it encourages us to embody similar qualities and trust in God’s provision.
